JV Coaches

Matt Phipps, JV Head Coach

Coach Phipps was born and raised in Cincinnati, OH where he graduated from Sycamore High School. During his time at Sycamore, he earned awards such as Junior Leadership Award, Senior Leadership Award, Most Improved Player, Team Captain, as well as was selected as a participant in the Cincinnati East vs. West All-Star Game his Senior Year. During his time at Sycamore, he mostly played 2nd base, as well as Shortstop. After his time at Sycamore, he went on to play collegiately at Eastern Kentucky University. Arriving on campus, he immediately made an impact his freshman year where he started over 30 games. Throughout his collegiate career he made majority of starts at 2nd base and Shortstop, while also making numerous starts at both 3rd base and 1st base. Later on his junior year, he was part of a conference championship, where his Colonels were the 2012 OVC Champions. His senior year, he was voted Team Captain by his teammates and coaches. Currently, Coach Phipps now resides in Galloway with his wife Jenni, daughter Carsyn, and their 2 dogs, Toby and Boomer.

Alex Hughes, JV Assistant Coach

Coach Hughes was born in Chicago, IL but grew up in Pickerington, OH most of his life. He graduated from Pickerington Central High School where he was a letterman in both baseball and basketball. During his senior baseball season, he earned all-conference and all-district honors as the team won a share of the OCC Cardinal division. After his time as a Tiger, Coach Hughes signed to play baseball Ashland University but ultimately transferred to Eastern Kentucky University after a year and a half into his time at Ashland. At Eastern, Coach Hughes played 1st base and DH during his three years as Colonel. His team was the 2012 OVC Champions during his junior year at Eastern. During his senior year, he was chosen as a member of the 2013 OVC All-Tournament Team. Coach Hughes lives in Gahanna with his wife Katelyn and their dog Mitts.
